Heroines: The Photographs of Lincoln Clarkes (NSFW)

Most often, addiction and the struggles that accompany it stay hidden behind closed doors. Yet in 1997, photographer Lincoln Clarkesexplored the streets and alleyways of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, capturing and exposing the images of over 400 female heroin addicts over the course of five years.

The project began with a 20-year-old addict named Patricia Johnson, a woman whose mix of innocence and illness drew Clarkes in. She invited the photographer into her home and simultaneously welcomed him into her world -- a place of danger, distrust and broken dreams. Clarkes then began photographing a number of heroin and crack cocaine addicts he encountered along the way, both to provide proof of Vancouver's horrific drug-addled underbelly and to give these long-neglected women a moment in the spotlight.

Barbara Nessim's images begin with a line, and in their finality capture something at once elegant and wild, feminine and androgynous, precise and remarkably simple.

The iconic illustrator, raised in the Bronx, began studying at Pratt in 1956 where she majored in graphic art and illustration. In a time dominated by Abstract Expressionist machismo, Nessim created artworks of a different breed. Minimalist graphics that combine elegance and grit, featuring gender-bending, street smart superheroes who were as traditionally fashionable as they were badass. This methodology of simultaneously working inside and outside the lines characterized Nessim's artistic career, like her simultaneous postures as a commercial illustrator and countercultural fine artist.

Over the next 50 years Nessim worked with psychedelic graphics, rebellious cut-up collages and glam rock pastels. Her work has appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone, Time, Ms, New York Magazine, The Boston Globe and was combined in a retrospective at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Aside from being one of the first prominent female illustrators, Nessim was also one of the first tech-savvy ones. "I really was the first illustrator to work with computers," she told The Guardian. "I can't tell you how many people thought it was a fad." Via

Ladybug's life by Alejandro Ferrer

These petite posers are some of the teeniest models on the planet but still know how to trigger a buzz of excitement. The world of macro models is a tricky art to master, but these incredible snaps are the result of precision, good fortune and love.

Wildlife photographer Alejandro Ferrer has spent two years capturing the microscopic realm of insects, favouring black and red spotted ladybirds. Despite measuring only millimetres, the 34-year-old shutterbug is able to capture the teeny critters in crystal clear snaps.

Alejandro, from San Roque, Spain, spends most of his days among the green fields in his hometown and builds makeshift photoshoots for his beloved ladies. Alejandro said: 'Most of the photos are made in a small field we have in the town. I've been focussing on photography for the last ten years but really enjoy the world of the tiny insects.

'My favourite insects are ladybirds, but I do really like them all, especially their vivd colours, textures and eyes. 'I've found that if you treat insects with love, they will return the favour and may even pose for you.'

Alejandro uses a Nikon D90, Tamron 90mm F2 macro lens 8, 530super ST sigma flash and a diffuser. He spends hours meticulously building his set, waiting until the sun is in the right position and the morning condensation is still present. But he insists the results are well worth the effort. Alejandro added: 'The pictures are amazing and I really enjoy spending time to take the pictures. The macro world is fascinating.' Via - dailymail.co.uk

Micro-Landscape Ink Drawings Inspired by Sound: Beth Brown

These drawings are like taking a microscope to a night club and observing the crawling skin of a rave dancer. These incredibly detailed ink drawings are physical manifestations of Beth Brown’s sound art. They look like an iTunes visualizer being used in a slightly darker sci-fi universe. The nonobjective shapes embody a wonderfully dense articulated structure and imply movement: slithering, morphing, collapsing, as a part of some strange foreign lifecycle on micro scale. Beth Brown builds accumulated sensory texture expressed through micro-landscapes.

It is a beautiful phenomenon when an artist may simply exist in order to manifest a creative mission. Crafting an artistic aesthetic is something that comes slowly and is nurtured over time. When an artist reaches this point of purity their style is recognizable across all creative outlets such as artwork, personality, values, and lifestyle. Beth Brown rides an elegant wave of creative expression with a mission that is successfully iconic across mediums. Via - visualnews.com

Idina Sackville - The woman who scandalised 1920s Society

Known for having more lovers than anyone could count, Idina Sackville hosted wife-swapping parties in Africa at which she would allocate bedroom keys over a throw of the dice or the turn of a card. She couldn’t be left alone in a room with a man without igniting gossip that they were having an affair.

When Sir William Orpen, the World War I artist and incorrigible womaniser, painted her portrait in 1915, rumours flared about a liaison.

Nearly a century on, the electricity between sitter and artist is palpable. Her wide, blue eyes are limpid and vulnerable and a low-cut black dress by Edward Molyneux, the most fashionable couturier of the day, is draped around her slender frame. Via
